Why did Japan lift the ban on Christianity in the 19th century? |
Although the authorities thought that there were no Christians in Japan, Hidden Christians began to profess their religious faith in public after contacting foreign missionaries who had returned to Japan in the middle of the 19th century. The authorities could not ignore this situation and strengthened the suppression of Christians. However, due to increasing criticism of the last wave of persecution from Western countries, the Meiji Government lifted the ban on Christianity. |
